Mengapa Kilogram dan Gelen Tidak Boleh Ditukar Dengan Satu Nombor Tetap

Kilogram mengukur jisim (jumlah sebenar jirim), manakala gelen mengukur isi padu (ruang 3 dimensi yang dihuni oleh objek atau cecair).

Oleh kerana 10 kilogram petrol ringan memenuhi ruang fizikal yang jauh lebih besar daripada 10 kilogram madu atau air tumpat, tiada pemalar sejagat seperti '1 kg = X gelen'. Ketumpatan adalah jambatan matematik yang penting antara jisim dan isi padu.

Liquid propane has a high thermal expansion coefficient—it expands approximately 1.5% for every 10°F (5.5°C) increase in temperature. The remaining 20% headspace (vapor space) allows the liquid to safely expand on hot days without tripping the pressure relief valve.
