British Imperial Gallon Standards & History Guide

The British Imperial gallon represents one of the most scientifically calibrated mass-based volume definitions in metrological history.

🏛️ 1. The 1824 Weights and Measures Act

Prior to 1824, Great Britain had three distinct gallon measures: the Winchester Corn Gallon (268.8 cu in), the Wine Gallon (231 cu in), and the Ale Gallon (282 cu in). To eliminate commercial confusion, the British Parliament unified all liquid and dry volume measures under the Weights and Measures Act of 1824 (5 Geo. 4. c. 74).

The newly established Imperial Gallon was defined as the volume of exactly 10 Imperial Standard Pounds of distilled water weighed in air against brass weights at an ambient temperature of 62°F (16.67°C) with the barometer at 30 inches of mercury (101.325 kPa). This yielded 277.274 cubic inches, which was updated in 1985 to exactly 4.546090 Litres.

⚖️ 2. Imperial Pint & Ounce Symmetry

One of the greatest conveniences of the British Imperial system is the mathematical symmetry between mass and volume for water:

• 1 Imperial Gallon = 160 Imperial Fluid Ounces = 10 lbs of water
• 1 Imperial Pint = 20 Imperial Fluid Ounces = 1.25 lbs of water
• 1 Imperial Fluid Ounce of water = 1 Avoirdupois Ounce of mass

In contrast, the US liquid system divides the gallon into 128 fl oz (16 fl oz per pint), meaning 1 US pint of water weighs 1.043 lbs (not 1 lb exact).

The Imperial gallon is legally defined under the British Weights and Measures Act of 1824 (and modern metric statutory instruments) as exactly 4.54609 Liters (277.419 cubic inches). It was standardized as the exact volume occupied by 10 pounds of distilled water weighed in air with brass weights at 62°F (16.67°C).
